REVIEW: Twilight (Dir. Catherine Hardwicke)
This past weekend I saw Twilight, a new teen romance movie where ‘has-trouble-fitting-in’ Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) falls in love with ‘107-years-old-but-somehow-still-angsty-vampire’ Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson).
My official judgment on the film: It’s not awful.
The general expectation that I polled from my friends was that they expected this movie to be contrived and for little girls. They are correct on both accounts, but even still, it’s not awful.

My biggest concern going into this movie was that the acting was going to be so wooden that I wouldn’t be able to handle it at all. Whether it’s my low expectations or legitimately being impressed, I truly liked a good 60-70% of the cast. Bella (played by some girl) was cast very well. Girl does a good job conveying that teen angst, and when they’re not filling her mouth with lines like “I’m not afraid of you, I’m afraid of losing you” I actually enjoyed her acting. The same can be said for her group of friends, her dad, her mom and even the Native American kid (whose character I know plays a bigger role in the next book/movie.)
The major problems I had with this movie revolved around the vampires. While I really do appreciate that this vampire story does new and different things with this particularly popular monster archetype, I feel as those some cinematic errors were made. For example, for the first half of the movie, I’m fairly certain the director (Catherine Hardwicke) told the vampire characters to ‘act like bug-eyed dummies.’ I understand that they were being portrayed as weird outsiders, but it was taken to far I thought. It wasn’t until after Bella figures out that Edward is a vampire (gasp) that Edward stops acting like a dummy and you can begin to accept him as a character.
The other problem with the vampires is that they covered them in such a think cake of white powder that I really felt like I was watching… well, Powder.
Those things aside, I would be lying if I said I didn’t like the movie. Besides my above criticism, I thought Catherine Hardwicke did an excellent job directing the film.
The other thing I would like to comment on is the example this story/film sets for young girls. I’ve been told that there are passages throughout the books that suggest Bella is willing to give up her identity (always a bad thing) just to be with this boy she’s crushing on, and when it comes to fiction targeted to teen girls, claims like that aren’t hard to believe. However, there are certain articles out there that are commenting on the story’s use of celabicy in a ‘sex-mad world.’ It seems as though many people are interpreting this love story as a good example of relationships for young girls, especially in how well Edward Cullen treats Bella. I think it’s very interesting that people are defending Twilight (both book and film) in terms such as this, and it’s also something I’m interested in reading more about. Of course, most studies in regards to the effect of media on today’s youth is markedly anti-media, so I don’t anticipate any breakthroughs on this any time soon.
But anyway, it’s some food for thought.
And the movie on a whole? Well, I doubt most people who read this would actually enjoy the movie, so I won’t recommend it to all of you. However, it might be right for some of you. You know who you are.
I am so excited that the DVD for twilight is finally here, I watched it yesterday with my daughter who fell in love with it too, she is to young to read the books, she is only 9 but I figured she could watch the movie because it is not as detailed as the books. Twilight is so amazing I love it.
